Low Back Pain

Low Back Pain (LBP) is the most common musculoskeletal complaint, affecting up to 80% of people at some point in their lifetime. LBP can vary in nature and may present in several ways:

  • Pain radiating down the leg, referred to as sciatica
  • A general constant ache in the lower back or buttocks
  • Localized sharp pain that may prevent standing

Symptoms of Low Back Pain

LBP can involve a wide range of symptoms, including:

  •  Dull ache in the lower back, hips, or pelvis
  • Sharp, tingling pain that may radiate down the leg
  • Muscle spasm or tightness
  • Pain that worsens in certain positions (bending or crouching) and improves when lying down
  • Stiffness and muscle spasm

Causes of Low Back Pain

Common causes of LBP include:

  • Sprains and strains: Injury to muscles, tendons, or ligaments from heavy lifting or improper technique
  •  Disc problems: Spinal discs provide cushioning between vertebrae. Discs can bulge (pinched nerve), tear (herniated disc), or degenerate with age
  • Poor posture
  • Being overweight
  •  Osteoarthritis
  •  Osteoporosis
  • Fibromyalgia: A condition causing achy, tender muscles

Can Low Back Pain Be Prevented?

To reduce the risk of developing LBP:

  • Exercise regularly to keep back muscles strong
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Use proper lifting techniques
  • Ergonomics: Use an ergonomic chair, consider a standing desk, and take frequent breaks to move if sitting for long periods

Management and Treatment of Low Back Pain

Treatment depends on the underlying cause, severity, and duration of pain. Options include:

Medications

Healthcare providers may prescribe NSAIDs or muscle relaxants to relieve pain and muscle spasms.

Injections

Epidural spinal steroid injections can help manage chronic LBP.

Surgery

Certain lower back injuries may require surgical repair.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy can strengthen muscles, improve flexibility, and prevent further injury. Techniques include:

  •  Hands-on therapy: mobilization, soft tissue techniques, traction, or manipulation
  •  Electrotherapy modalities for pain control
  • Rehabilitation with core strengthening exercises
  • Ergonomic education
  • Guidance on proper sitting posture and lifting mechanics
  • Acupuncture
